A timecode break is a pain because when importing footage, especially when batch capturing into Final Cut, your capture aborts, forcing you to fast forward past the break in order to bring in your footage. These breaks usually occur when you fast forward or rewind your tape in the middle of filming, leaving timecode breaks on your tape.
A cool tip to avoid timecode breaks is “striping” or “blacking and coding” your tapes. To do this, simply place your dv tape into your camera, keep the lens cap on, hit record and let it roll from the start to the end of the tape. Doing this ensures that consistent time code is recorded onto your tape, avoiding breaks, and easing your importing process.
